Rachel Carr and the Meddling Penguins

By Domino Jones

These pages show Rachel Carr’s funny experience with penguins on her trip to Cape Hallet, a research station in Antarctica. The station was built on a site of outstanding biodiversity in 1956, with a small patch of particularly rich vegetation which supports a variety of land animals. It is the home of an impressive Adelie penguin colony. The station was closed in 1973 and remains a site of cultural and historical significance. From her visit, Rachel and her team made a management plan to protect the site and its inhabitants. The penguins had been displaced during the station’s operation, disturbed by human presence, and only returned after its closure.

This is an excerpt from the comic ‘Stories of Ice and Science,’ which features the experiences and anecdotes of 5 renowned researchers. The comic celebrates the 50th anniversary of the International Glaciological Society British Branch and was presented at the annual meeting in Liverpool on Sept. 2, 2024.
