In total, since inception in 2012, I estimate that the website has had over 6.4 million page views.

In the year to end of July 2026, the website had 566,278 pageviews from 326,322 active users, averaging around 50,000 – 60,000 pageviews in peak months.

Significant new innovations include the major StoryMaps Collection, The Greenland Connection, focused on decolonising the UK-led historical explorations of Greenland.

Guest contributors

Guest contributors in the last 12 months include Jakob Hamann, Dingyu Xuan, Isabelle Wicks, Kate Winter, Tamara Gerber, and Owen King. All received mentoring, support, training and encouragement for content development, considering intended audiences, writing styles and illustrations. Some were supported by ongoing IAS and NERC Arctic Office funding. Guest author career stage tended towards PhD/ECR, providing an important and ongoing contribution to training the next generation of science writers.

Monthly traffic is around 60,000 pageviews per month (2000-3000/day). Traffic peaks coincide with school and university teaching periods, suggesting regular use within formal education. Traffic begins to dip in June and reaches its low in July, reflecting the summer academic break.

Traffic spikes in December, March and late July are US/UK based and focused on specific pages, which suggests curricular alignment. The traffic spike in March for example was primarily driven by uses from the US, largely landing on /estimating-glacier-contribution-to-sea-level-rise/ page. Most of this traffic was a direct source, suggesting the page was shared in a major educational portal, high-traffic news citation, or classroom.

Anomalous spikes in May are related to users from Singapore and have low engagement times and high direct traffic to the homepage, characteristic of bot crawlers.

Since January 2023, the website has received 1.5 m pageviews in three and half years.

Overall, I estimate that the website has received at least 6.4 million pageviews since inception, not including visitors during a Google Analytics data gap from October 2023-April 2024.

Most visited pages

Glacier processes and types has a high engagement rate, and there is significant interest in the “changing Greenland ice sheet” and “West Antarctic Ice Sheet” sections.

Wildlife of Antarctica and Ice Core Basics remain the strongest entry points for users, consistently appearing as the top landing pages during high traffic periods.

Tracking of origin shows that a google search remains the most common way for people to find the website. Nearpod is an educational platform that had the highest engagement rate (56%), confirming the site’s strong value in classroom settings.

Traffic from China is largely direct traffic, with users landing on deep educational content such as /glacial-processes/ and /ice-streams/. This suggests the site is being shared in curriculum lists or academic forums. Users from the United States and United Kingdom have exceptional engagement.

Engagement

The ‘Engagement rate’ is the percentage of active, involved visits to the website. It measures how many people actually interacted with the website, rather than immediately leaving (replacing the old ‘bounce rate’).
