Glaciers are so massive that they deform the solid earth underneath them, pushing it down and out. When the ice melts, the earth bounces back. We call this fancy process ‘glacio-isostatic rebound’. When thinking about global sea-level rise over longer timescales, the process becomes important and difficult to account for.
